COEUR d'ALENE - They've been the top team in the north all season long.

Now, they've got to prove it on the other side of the state starting next Thursday in Idaho Falls.

Shay Hannigan-Luther and Jack Barrett scored two goals apiece as the top-seeded Lake City Timberwolves rolled past the third-seeded Post Falls Trojans 8-0 in the 5A Region 1 boys soccer tournament on Tuesday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

It is Lake City's first regional title since 2006, when the Timberwolves finished fourth in coach Chad Beadell's second season at the school.

"It meant a lot for the guys to bring it back home this year," Beadell said. "We haven't had this in a long time. It means a lot to them. The guys played outstanding today from the front line to the back and our finishing was impeccable."

Lake City (15-0) opens the state tournament next Thursday against Centennial (16-1-2), the third seed from District 3, at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.

"We don't have a win at state right now, so now we've got to think about what's next," Beadell said. "We'll try to keep them focused and healthy. When you get to state, three games in three days is a lot to ask, but our depth is going to help us."

Lake City held Post Falls - which had won the previous two regional titles - to two shots on goal, both coming in the second half.

"It comes down to the mentality the boys had before the game," Post Falls coach John Mueller said. "Lake City is a great team, and definitely earned first place in the league and region," Mueller said. "Against Coeur d'Alene, our boys thought they could take it to them and they did. This game, I wish I could say we had the same confidence, but we didn't have that same mentality. We didn't get off the bus the same way. It came down to us being outplayed."

Post Falls (8-7-1) will face the fifth-place finisher from District 3 in a state play-in match on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Lewiston.

"The boys know how to play," Mueller said. "It just depends on what mind frame they enter the field with."

Hannigan-Luther opened the scoring in the seventh minute, and added an assist on Lake City's second goal a little over a minute later.

"We really came together as a team today," Hannigan-Luther said. "My teammates were playing me really good balls today when we were on the attack. Everything came together really well today. Our goal at state is to definitely take it one match at a time. We're feeling a little pressure, but we feel like we can step up to the challenge and play confident."

"Both Alec (Maldonado) and Shay were on the right page today," Beadell said. "They've been that way all year between Alec, Shay and Jack (Barrett), and bringing in Devon (Hoffman) and those guys are getting the job done. It's a luxury I've got where we can sub and we don't go down at all. We just keep going, and going, and going. Those guys have been playing hard all year, and it's paying off for them right now."

After losing 3-2 in overtime in last year's regional final to Post Falls, Lake City ran away with it early on.

This is the first time Lake City has been undefeated this deep into the season. The Timberwolves have never had an undefeated season.

"They've put a lot of time in this year," Beadell said. "To get where we are this year is incredible. Not many teams can do this, and now we've got to carry this on to state. Our goal was to win league, then districts, and now what can we do at state. We've got to bring a trophy home, that's the most important part. The north has been super competitive this year and we want to bring something home to show them."
