Calling all young runners.

It’s time for the Harvest Run.

North Idaho Panhandle Cross Country is hosting the youth run Saturday at Hayden Canyon, on Lancaster Road, a half-mile north of Government Way.

“The race is a really beautiful course,” said organizer, “Coach Colene” Hotmer.

Registration begins at noon, and race time is 1 p.m.

The cost to enter is $10, which includes a shirt, or $5 without the shirt. Scholarships are available upon request.

Proceeds from the race, which is in its second year, will benefit Running Shoes 4 Kids, a nonprofit that provides running shoes for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate in cross-country because their families can’t afford appropriate gear for them.

Hotmer started the program after running a successful after-school cross-country program for several years as a parent volunteer at Athol Elementary. During that time, she saw many children who were unable to rise to their full potential as runners because they were unable to afford proper footwear.

Running Shoes 4 Kids accepts nominations and requests for the shoes. Hotmer said they hope to receive more requests this year.

She said a young boy who was recently nominated was running in improper shoes and it appeared his family was struggling financially. They later found out the boy’s brother was seriously ill and being treated in a hospital in Spokane.

North Idaho Panhandle Cross Country was organized by Hotmer and several other parents. It’s mission is to create an accepting, supportive, fun and positive running environment.

Their motto is “Every step is a running step,” whether those steps are taken while running cross-country or just going through life.

The Harvest Run is open to kids 4-14. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten kids run a quarter-mile. The half-mile race is open to first- to fourth-graders and fifth- to eighth-grade students run a mile.

A one-mile citizen race is open to all ages.

Requests and nominations for shoes for kid who need them can be mailed to Running Shoes 4kiDs, P.O. Box 585, Athol, ID 83801 or sent by email to runningshoes4kids@yahoo.com.
