COEUR d'ALENE - Lake City senior Courtny Hanson came up to strike at the right time, just seven minutes before halftime, in the championship game of the 5A Region 1 girls soccer tournament.

The backup forward ended up scoring two goals, in a 3-0 win by the No. 1 seed Timberwolves over the No. 3 seed Coeur d'Alene Vikings on Wednesday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

Her first came off a high bouncing ball, after she waited for it to come down a few feet and drilled it over the outstretched hands of Viking goalkeeper Julia Roach high and into the net.

"She has a knack for getting opportunities," Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said of Hanson. "She's been scoring like that all year, she scored on a half-volley ... Courtny can start for any team in the league. She doesn't for us, she's OK with it, she knows what her role is and fills it great. She's a great player to throw on the field here and there."

Hanson's second goal came on a penalty kick to finalize the scoring in the 60th minute, after the head official ruled a Viking defender pushed a Timberwolf player in the back.

"It was definitely just kind of a gift from God," Hanson said. "Because it's our senior year and we can finally go on to state again and possibly win. I am super excited, I believe we can get all the way to the top (of this year's state tournament) if we played like we did today."

Lake City won the state championship two years ago by beating Post Falls, then the Timberwolves lost to Boise in the first round of last season's state tournament, finishing fifth.

Lake City (14-2-1) - which carries an 11-game win streak - faces Eagle (15-2-2) to open the state 5A tournament next Thursday at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex. Eagle is the third seed from District 3 (Boise).

Hanson said she enjoys her role as a part-time starter, coming off the bench for the most part.

"I've been on varsity for two years," Hanson said. "So obviously, girls ahead of me are going to start. But I don't mind because we have such a stacked team, that we can just bring them in, no matter what."

Coeur d'Alene (8-6-1) faces Timberline High of Boise on Saturday in Lewiston in a state play-in match. Timberline is the fifth-seed out of District 3 (Boise). Coeur d'Alene's last state appearance came in 2009.

"I'm really proud of them," Coeur d'Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. "They didn't give up, they played their hearts out. Lake City put away their chances and unfortunately, we couldn't put away ours."

The Vikings' best shot at a goal was in the 35th minute, just two minutes after Hanson's score, which would have tied the game at 1. Coeur d'Alene forward Maggie Vietri drilled a ball that bounced off of the hands of Timberwolf goalie Tiegan Horton and it appeared the ball trickled right on the edge of the goal line, before Horton knocked it away.

"It looked like from our standpoint like it went in," Vredenburg said. "Some of Lake City's girls walked away like they might have thought it was a goal. But we've got to finish that."

Maddi Ward's one-timer on a cross from Havana Johnson gave Lake City a 2-0 lead just two minutes into the second half.

First half - 1, LC, Courtny Hanson (unassisted), 33:00. Second half - 2, LC, Maddi Ward (Havana Johnson), 42:00. 3, LC, Hanson (penalty kick), 60:00.

Shots on goal - Cd'A 7, LC, 10.

Saves - Cd'A, Julia Roach, 7, LC, Tiegan Horton, 4.
