The Daily Inter Lake is proud to sponsor a debate Sunday among all three candidates for Montana’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

It promises to be a heated and informative 90 minutes.

Republican Ryan Zinke, Democrat John Lewis and Libertarian Mike Fellows will face off at Flathead Valley Community College at 5 p.m.

Panelists for the debate will be the Inter Lake’s managing editor, Frank Miele, and community editor, Carol Marino, as well as Matt Bunk, publisher of the Western News in Libby. The moderator will be Matt Baldwin, editor of the Whitefish Pilot.

Tickets are needed to attend the debate, and they have already been distributed through the three campaigns as well as through a random online drawing hosted on the Inter Lake’s Facebook page.

However, we encourage all our readers to take time to watch the debate live on the Internet Sunday at www.dailyinterlake.com. If you can’t view it then, we plan to archive video of the debate on our website later in the week.

Voting is serious business. Make a pledge to learn everything you can about the candidates for this and other races before sending in your ballot or visiting your polling places on Nov. 4.

Malala is inspiration for all

In every generation there are those few whose humanitarian work stands head and shoulders above the rest. Malala Yousafzai is one of those special few.

The 17-year-old Pakistani girl last week shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Kailash Satyarthi of India, a great crusader for peace in his own right.

Malala, the youngest recipient of the peace award, was shot in the head by the Taliban for her efforts to promote education for girls. She miraculously recovered and rose up to take her message to the world stage. Even when the spotlight was put on her for her courage and tireless work to help other girls get an education, she put the light right back on those she seeks to help, saying “this award is for all those children who are voiceless, whose voices need to be heard.”

The world needs more Malalas.

A local lesson on doing good

Jeremy Minnehan of Kalispell has been involved in a worthy charitable project for a very long time. He’s been saving aluminum soda pop tabs for 25 years to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, a nonprofit program that provides housing for families when they have to stay out of town while their child is hospitalized. Ronald McDonald Houses can be found in 62 countries, providing stability and resources for families who most often are dealing with very dire medical circumstances.

Minnehan, who has Down syndrome, started collecting the tabs when he was 8, and now at age 33 he’s getting tabs from all over the country to help out his charitable cause. It goes to show how little it takes to make a big difference.
