COEUR d'ALENE - Two brothers, one girl to love and one production of "Epic Proportions" makes for a complex comedy now playing at Lake City High School.

Ten Troupe de Wolfe actors are taking on this epic tale within a tale. Set in the 1930s, "Epic Proportions" follows brothers Benny (junior Oskar Owens, 16) and Phil (senior Austin Allen, 17) as they go to work in the Arizona desert as extras on the set of the Biblical epic film, "Exeunt Omnes," directed by the mysterious D.W. DeWitt. The 3,400 extras in "Exeunt Omnes" are supervised by Louise Goldman (senior Piper Glover, 17), who divides the extras into groups and has them count off by four. While Phil's experience as a "three" includes pleasant scenes of feasts and parades, Benny's position as a "four" places him in all 10 Biblical plagues.

"It's the fact that it's a comedy, and it's so funny it's not so blatantly obvious," said Austin, of Rathdrum. "The show actually makes you think there are times when we're acting and times when we're not."

As the play progresses and things begin to fall apart, Phil ends up behind the camera with Benny in a starring role. And they both fall in love with Louise, causing a rivalry typical of epic films.

"It's kind of fun, sort of stressful," said Piper, of Coeur d'Alene, adding that her character kisses the brothers multiple times.

"I'm comfortable with it, we're friends," she said. "I know them pretty well."

The LCHS production of "Epic Proportions" is directed by Sandy Seaton, program director and theater arts teacher. Seaton said they chose "Epic Proportions" because they were looking for a good comedy to perform and looked into it at the suggestion of a parent. Once she read it with her students, they were all on board.

"I have been working on costumes forever," she said, adding that all the actors will play about nine characters each.

"I think it's a really fun play because it's an ensemble cast," Piper said. "You see everybody a lot even though there are a lot of characters. It's unique in that way because you don't need a huge cast to create that sort of atmosphere."

The cast includes Grace Warnick as DeWitt/Narrator, Sydney Bell, Noah Garrett, Kyto Katori, Lindsay Montgomery, Brandon Miller and David Kelling. Riley Hess and Star Caine serve as stage management.

"This play has been an amazing experience to me," said Oskar, of Coeur d'Alene. "Everybody in it is extremely helpful and really is like a second family to me. Within this play I have made connections to people that I otherwise would be unable to. I am very grateful to have been cast in this and make such great friends who have the same love of theater as I do."

The show continues tonight at 7 in the LCHS Auditorium. Additional dates are Oct. 18, 23, 24 and 25. Ticket prices: $7 general admission, $6 students, seniors and children and $5 LCHS students with LCHS ASB card. Tickets can be purchased from Karen in the activities office, during the lunch hour prior to show dates, one hour before show time at the ticket booth or at the door. All seating is open. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
