COEUR d'ALENE - Candidates in the Nov. 4 general election have filed their sunshine reports, disclosing what they raised in the summer months.

The reports cover money raised and spent between May 31 and Sept. 30. Another round of reports will be due Oct. 28, covering the time period from Oct. 1 through Oct. 19.

The big money race is for Legislative District 4, House seat B, where Democratic challenger Anne Nesse is reporting that she raised $8,462, but $4,211 of that is her own money. She started the summer with $1,770 in the bank, and now has $7,059 in the bank. She spent $3,173 during the reporting period. Of 36 donors to her campaign, 30 are local.

Nesse is challenging incumbent Rep. Kathy Sims, who started the summer with $3,230 in her campaign account. She raised $5,393, but like Nesse, Sims donated $5,256 to her own campaign. Sims spent $4,503 and still had $4,119 in the bank at the beginning of this month. Six of her 17 donors are not local.

The other House seat in District 4 is uncontested, but there is a race for an open Senate seat in that district. Republican candidate Mary Souza is leading Constitution candidate Ray Writz in fundraising. Souza started with $83 in the bank and raised $1,800, none of which is her own money. She spent $1,032 and had $801 in the bank at the end of the reporting period.

Writz started with nothing and reported $807 in contributions, but only $150 of that was his own money. He has spent $701, and still has $105 in the bank.

Another big money race is Legislative District 2, House seat A, where Democratic challenger Cheryl Stransky has raised $7,973. She started with $2,601 and spent $7,073 during the reporting period. She still has $3,501 in the bank. Twelve of her 80 contributors were not local.

Incumbent District 2 Rep. Vito Barbieri is running on the Republican ticket, and came into the period with $8,375 in the bank and raised $3,550 more. He has spent $2,084 and has $9,876 in the bank. He had outstanding debits of $928 at the beginning of this month. Of his 11 contributors, only two were local.

The other District 2 House seat and Senate seat are uncontested races.

In Legislative District 3, House seat B and the Senate seat are uncontested, but House seat A is being challenged by Democratic candidate Michelle Lippert. She did not raise any money during the summer.

Her opponent, Republican incumbent Rep. Ron Mendive, started the summer with $5,640 and raised an additional $1,650 mostly from outside sources. He spent $1,414 and had $5,875 in the bank. His only local donation this past summer was a $250 contribution from the Hagadone Corp., which also owns The Press.

At the county level races, the District 2 County Commissioner race has generated the most money. The open seat has attracted Democratic candidate Jerry Shriner, who entered the race with $466 and raised $7,856. He has spent $8,492 and was running a balance of negative $170 in the bank. He also reported a debt to himself totaling $2,353.

His challenger is Republican candidate David Stewart, who started with $330 in the bank and raised $4,029. He has spent $1,716 and ended the period with $2,623 in the bank.

In the other open County Commission seat, Republican candidate Marc Eberlein started with $84 and raised $3,502. He spent $1,630 and had reserves of $1,956 at the end of the period. He has lent his campaign $1,035.

Eberlein's challenger, Bruce Nobel, started with $1,092 and raised $3,724. He spent $4,347 and had $469 in reserve. He lent his campaign $200.

In the County Clerk race, Republican incumbent Jim Brannon started with $34 and raised $1,985. He spent $1,571, and had $448 in the bank. Brannon reported he has lent his campaign $1,858. Democrat Larry Belmont reported that he had not raised any money.

In the race for the open County Treasurer seat, Steve Matheson has the biggest war-chest. He started with $5,630 and reported an additional $188 in in-kind donations. He has lent his campaign $8,091 this year, and reported that $7,000 of that is still outstanding.

His Democratic opponent, Janet Callen, has raised $2,715 and spent $2,621. She had $94 in the bank and lent her campaign $1,000, which is still outstanding.

The County Assessor race has generated the smallest amount of donations. Republican incumbent Mike McDowell started the period with $1,461 in campaign funds and only raised $50 during the summer months. He spent $416, and still has $1,094 in the bank. His challenger, Democrat Shirley McFaddan, didn't raise any money during the period.
