WORLEY — Five residents escaped a fire that destroyed a single-family home in Worley today.

The fire at 355 Lena Louie Lane in Worley was reported around 11 a.m.

One of the occupants, Elisa Garcia, said she was watching TV when a passerby knocked on the door and notified her that the house was on fire.

Katrina Lasarte, the homeowner, said she was sleeping when Garcia, her daughter, woke her up.

“My daughter came yelling to run because the house was on fire,” Lasarte said while watching the fire from across the street.

Lasarte said she does not have insurance on the home and was hoping that the Coeur d’Alene Tribe could assist her in the interim. She has been living at the home for 16 years.

Neither Lasarte nor Garcia knew what started the fire. It appears that the fire started in the attached carport of the home.

Lasarte, who is not employed, said nine people lived at the home. She said friends and neighbors in the area should be able to provide temporary housing.

The Worley Fire District, Gateway Fire Protection District in Plummer and Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police responded to the fire.

Fire crews prevented the fire from spreading to neighbors’ homes and timber and brush behind the residence.
