SANDPOINT — Cary Gray has become accustomed to getting strange looks on the road.

Like many adventurous souls out there, he’s committed himself to pedaling around the continent using nothing but the power of his own body. It’s his choice of vehicle, however, that distinguishes him from the pack of endurance cyclists. For more than a year, Gray, 25, has explored North, Central and South America from the saddle of a unicycle.

It’s a choice that invariably raises eyebrows and drops jaws when drivers pass Gray on the road. He’s come to enjoy that dynamic, particularly when people ask him about his goals. No matter where he’s riding or who he encounters, the reaction is almost always one of curiosity, excitement and enthusiasm.
