WORLEY - Katrina Lasarte woke up Monday morning to her daughter frantically screaming that their house was on fire and to get to safety.

Moments later, the single-family home on 355 Lena Louie Lane in Worley was engulfed in flames and destroyed.

Five residents inside the home at the time of the fire evacuated and escaped injuries.

One of the occupants, Elisa Garcia, said she was in the living room watching TV around 11 a.m. when a passerby who saw smoke knocked on the door and notified her that the house was on fire.

Lasarte, the homeowner, said she was awakened to Garcia screaming about the fire.

"My daughter came yelling to run because the house was on fire," Lasarte said while watching the fire from across the street.

Lasarte said she does not have insurance on the home. She has been living at the home for 16 years.

Neither Lasarte nor Garcia knew what started the fire. It appears that the fire started in the attached carport of the home.

Lasarte, who is not employed, said nine people lived at the home. She was hopeful that friends, neighbors and others in the Worley area could help with basic necessities.

Next-door neighbor Shelley Little Crow was initially concerned that the fire would spread to her parents' house, where she was watching the fire.

"It's sad to watch something like this because they're without a home now," she said.

The house in Worley is not owned by the Coeur d'Alene Housing Authority, said Heather Keen, Coeur d'Alene Tribe spokeswoman.

"Various tribal departments, including our social services department, are working with the family right now to provide clothing and shelter for the (victims)," Keen said.

The Worley Fire District, Gateway Fire Protection District in Plummer and Coeur d'Alene Tribal Police responded to the fire.

A tribal police officer who arrived before firefighters opened windows to the home to ensure everyone had exited.

Fire crews prevented the fire from spreading to neighbors' homes and timber and brush behind the residence.
