She married Michael Weber on November 13, 1940, in Tschippendorf. Shortly after their first daughter was born, Mike went away to war. During that time Barbara and her family had to flee because of the war front approaching their village. As refugees they traveled by cart and train, ending up in Austria, where she and her sister, Sofia, found work on a dairy farm. In 1948 Barbarawasreunited with Mike, who was released by the Russians after he was taken prisoner near the end of the war. Two more daughters were born in Austria and in 1952 the family immigrated to the USA, sponsored by the Sunnyslope Church of the Brethren in Wenatchee, Washington.
Barbara worked in department stores and was a cook for the school district, in addition to having 4 more children after relocating to Wenatchee. Barbara also worked in the cherry orchard that they owned in Wenatchee and the apple orchard they owned in Omak until retiring in 1982.
Following retirement, Mike and Barbara moved to Wenatchee and in 1990 they moved to Post Falls, Idaho. They celebrated 72 years of marriage before Mike died in 2012.
Barbara fulfilled her wish to write the story of her experiences during the war. With the help of Vera-Fern Holland she penned, "Fleeing to the Friendly Enemy," which chronicled those events. The book was made into a musical and performed by Spokane Community College.
Her children and spouses, Maria and Dale Hedman, Inge Weber, Christine and Joe Czyszczewski, Walter and Kathy Weber, Fred and Diane Weber, Elsa and Barry Nelson, and Kurt and Paula Weber, survive Barbara. Her brother Mike Ohler, and sisters Hermi Fish and Sofie Weber also survive her. Barbara was "Oma" to 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death, as well as her husband, Mike, and sisters Maria and Katharina.
Services will be at 1:00 P.M. on November 15 at the Sunnyslope Church cemetery. Yates Funeral Homes has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
