BOZEMAN — Stillwater Christian scored early and kept the pressure on, defeating Yellowstone County Home School 4-1 to win their 12th straight Montana Christian Athletic Association soccer championship on Saturday.
As he has all season, Joe King led the Cougars with a pair of goals in the first half, giving Stillwater an advantage nine minutes into the game and again minutes before halftime.
Any hope for YCHS to come back was ended shortly after half when Dane LaVigne scored a minute in to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. BJ Bach, who assisted on the goal, scored his own five minutes later to give Stillwater a commanding 4-0 lead.
Yellowstone County scored in the 54th minute on a penalty kick in the only blemish for Stillwater.
“It was a great game,” Stillwater coach Ryan O’Rourke said. “Our game against Heritage Christian [in the semifinals] caused us to step our game up in a big way.
“We came off from the starting whistle with a lot of intensity. I can’t point to anybody that didn’t have a big game. It was a pretty dominant performance throughout the game.”
King was named the tournament MVP and was one of five Cougars named to the all-tournament team. Isaac Neumann and Schuylar Kauffman joined King on the first-team all-tournament squad and B.J. Bach and Jarrett Danz were on the second team.
