Championship week for Class AA, A soccer

Flathead’s boys (4-11-0) and girls (5-7-3) will both face Bozeman, the top seed from the Eastern Division, while the Glacier boys meet Billings Senior and the Glacier girls play Great Falls C.M. Russell in opening-round action Thursday at the Class AA state soccer tournament.

All the matches will be held at Siebel Fields in Great Falls.

The girls matches are set for noon with the boys to follow at 2:30.

Friday’s semifinal action for boys and girls is 1:30 p.m. The championships matches are 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Both Flathead teams are No. 4 seeds from the Western Division having won state play-in matches. The Bozeman boys (11-1-2) and girls (11-1-2) earned automatic byes to state for winning the Eastern Division regular-season title.

Glacier’s boys (8-4-3) and girls (7-4-4) are No. 3 Western seeds and also advanced to state with state play-in match victories last week.

The Bozeman boys are defending state champions.

Billings Senior, which won the girls title in 2013, did not qualify this season.

The Flathead girls finished fifth last season. The Flathead boys and Glacier boys and girls did not compete at state last year.

In Class A postseason soccer action, Columbia Falls (9-1-4) hosts Laurel (11-2-2) at 11 a.m. in the girls championship match at Flip Darling Field on Saturday.

Columbia Falls knocked off six-time defending state champion Billings Central last Saturday in Billings in overtime, 3-2.

Laurel advanced with a 3-0 victory at Whitefish.

Columbia Falls hosted a state championship in 2012, losing to Billings Central 6-0.

The Wildkats won state in 2004, beating Laurel 6-1 in Laurel.

This marks the program’s fourth trip to the finals.

In the Class A boys title match on Saturday, Corvallis (13-1-0) plays at Belgrade (13-1-0) at 1 p.m.

Belgrade defeated visiting Whitefish 3-0 in last Saturday’s semifinals. Corvallis moved on with a 3-1 home victory over Bigfork.

Livingston, last year’s state boys champion, was ousted in the quarterfinals by Bigfork, 2-1.
