Glacier held firm its top spot in Class AA and Bigfork rose to No. 5 in the final complete Associated Press prep football poll of the season, released Wednesday.
Glacier, which has held the top spot all seven weeks of voting, was the unanimous top pick this week, garnering all nine first-place votes. Behind the Wolfpack, Great Falls C.M. Russell rose one spot to No. 2 in the poll, leapfrogging Helena High, which fell back to third. Billings Senior, which beat Helena this week, remained fourth and Skyview fifth.
Whitefish and Columbia Falls each picked up votes this week, the Bulldogs a fourth and a fifth and the Wildcats a fourth place vote. Belgrade held on to the top spot it has had the last three weeks, with seven first-place votes. Butte Central had the other two top votes, coming in second. Billings Central, Dillon and Miles City round out the top five.
Columbia Falls opens the playoffs against Hamilton on Saturday, the winner advancing to face No. 3 Billings Central. Whitefish will play the winner of No. 5 Miles City and Havre next week. No. 4 Dillon opens against Frenchtown, the third seed from the Northwest.
Fairfield continued its run atop Class B, getting seven of eight first-place votes. The Eagles led fellow unbeatens Huntley Project and Glasgow in the final poll. Townsend, the only other team to get a top vote, is in fourth followed by Bigfork, which jumped a spot to finish the regular season No. 5.
Jefferson (Boulder), Choteau, Forsyth, Baker and Conrad round out the top 10.
Bigfork opens the postseason with Deer Lodge and wouldn’t face a ranked team until a potential semifinal game. Eureka, the only Class B team with a losing record in the playoffs, opens against No. 3 Glasgow.
There are a few marquee matchups in the first weekend of the Class B playoffs, led by No. 4 Townsend against No. 8 Forsyth. Top-ranked Fairfield plays No. 7 Choteau in a rematch of a Week 6 match that saw the Eagles win 53-14. No. 2 Huntley Project hosts No. 6 Jefferson in the only other ranked matchup of the weekend.
Ennis and Wibaux tied for the top spot in Class C 8-Man, and Stanford-Geyser-Denton topped 6-Man. Hot Springs remained No. 3 in 6-Man.
