THOMPSON FALLS – The Bluehawks faced their first opponent of the year, gaining ground and fighting to the end with all of their hearts.

In their game against Florence, the team lost by one touchdown, a final score of 13-20.

“It was a really good first game for both teams before we get the season kicked off,” Head Coach Jared Koskela said. “I learned a lot and so did the kids.”

The learning experience showed the coach that his kids were willing to fight to the end – something the team lacked last year. According to the first year coach, the team sometimes gave up last year, something he decided to change early on and so far the dedication seems to be there.

“I know the attitude was good. The determination and hard work is still there,” Coach Koskela said.

The game gave the coach a better idea of how the kids compete on the field, something that will prove to be invaluable. The team will be working on their blocking in upcoming practices, ensuring they stay with their opponent and finish through to the whistle, Coach Koskela said.

Coach Koskela credited Trais Hoisington with a solid performance.

“He really was a man amongst boys out there,” Coach Koskela said.

Hoisington returned a touchdown, had an interception touchdown and also caught a long touchdown pass. Florence had to adjust their defense to combat Hoisington, a good sign to the coach.

Kolt Shaw and Greg Wadsworth were also credited for a strong defensive game. Wadsworth had nine tackles, while Shaw had ten.

So far the defense is proving to be stronger than their offense, but that is where the hard work will come into play.

“It had to be the first game jitters,” Coach Koskela said speaking of the offense. “They are going to learn from it.”

The team will be going up against Cut Bank on Sept. 5 and the team is out for revenge.

According to Coach Koskela, the team proved to be more physical than the Bluehawks last year. Thompson Falls was unable to score a touchdown, something that will hopefully change this time around.

“We left there with our heads down and bruises,” Coach Koskela said. “It will be a revenge game. They are coming to our house now.”

The stands at Previs Field will surely be packed as the Bluehawks try their luck at payback.
