Youth softball

Columbia Falls Youth Softball Association is working alongside Kalispell Youth Softball Association to offer a fundamentals-based softball program. Fall Ball is open for children in grades K-8 and will run through September. Coaches Dave Kehr, Kelly Stoelzle and Tom Kemppainen will assist in the program. Practices will be held on Thursdays in Columbia Falls and Tuesdays in Kalispell. Games will be held on Fridays for grades K-4 and Saturday for grades 5-8. Family archery

Montana State Parks and Cabela’s will host a family archery day at Lone Pine State Park on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide archers an opportunity to test out the newly re-built targets at the park’s archery range. A youth archery game area will be set up in the volleyball court, and a free barbecue lunch will be provided by Cabela’s. For more information, call Amy Grout at 406-755-2706 ext. 3.

Ultramarathon

The 33rd Le Grizz 50 Mile Ultramarathon will take place along Hungry Horse Reservoir on Saturday, Oct. 11. Sponsored by the Cheetah Herders Athletic Club, the foot race helps get first-time ultradistance runners to the finish line. The historical completion rate averages 95 percent. Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
