Spikers take fifth at tourney

The Columbia Falls girls volleyball team took fifth at the Northwest-Southwest Tip-Off tourney Sept. 5-6 in Frenchtown.

The Wildkats won eight games in Friday pool play and beat Hamilton 25-15, 20-25, 15-11 on Saturday during the placing matches.

Frenchtown won the tournament, and defending state champion Corvallis took second.

The Kats begin conference play this week as they host Libby on Thursday. Freshmen games will start at 4:15 p.m.

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
