HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation officials say the wildfire season is winding down in Montana.

DNRC state forester Bob Harrington told the Environmental Quality Council in Helena Thursday there was really not a lot to report compared to other years.

He said the 251 fires so far in this year is a number close to the five-year average. But the 20 square miles of land burned is just 12 percent of the five-year average.

Harrington said more than $1.7 million has been spent on fires this year, which he says is the lowest amount in a decade. That leaves more than $44 million in a fire suppression fund that will be available for use next year.
