Glacier didn’t take its time easing into this game.

Playing the team that had handed the Wolfpack its last three losses, Glacier (3-0) needed a little more than a minute to score its first touchdown, running away with a 38-8 win over Bozeman (1-2) in a Class AA football game on Friday night at Legends Stadium.

The Wolfpack ran the opening kickoff to its own 38-yard-line and five plays later found itself in the end zone with a 7-0 lead, just 1 minute, 11 seconds after it first snapped the ball.

A 40-yard bomb to Noah Lindsay set up an 11-yard run from Logan Jones for the touchdown and the Wolfpack offense was quickly firing at full horsepower without the primer it needed in its first two contests.

Glacier would score on four of its six drives in the first half, only stymied by a quick interception and a run of penalties.

“I love coaching this group of guys because they respond to every challenge so well,” Glacier coach Grady Bennett said. “It doesn’t matter what you throw out there.

“All week we’ve talked about starting well. Whatever group goes out there needed to execute. They go out and respond.”

Glacier moved quickly on offense, grabbing significant chunks of yards each time, though never breaking loose for a huge play.

Jones scored his second touchdown of the game on the Wolfpack’s third drive, catching a 25-yard touchdown pass to put Glacier up 14-0. In the second quarter, a 42-yard pass to Sam McCamley and a nifty 13-yarder to tight end Jaxon Hashley set up a 2-yard touchdown run from Thomas Trefney. Devin Cochran hauled in a 15-yard pass with 15 seconds to play in the half to give Glacier a 28-0 lead at the break.

“I liked our execution tonight,” Bennett said.

“Bozeman’s a team that [takes away the big play]. That’s the thing about their defense. They play a good, deep Cover 2 and it’s hard to get the big play on them. That’s why we’ve struggled to score against them. They’ve had good personnel but their defensive scheme is really good and they make you drive the football. They were able to do that tonight.”

With its lead secured, Glacier didn’t need to do much in the second half.

Bozeman quarterback Balue Chapman, in as a running option in the third quarter, threw an easy interception for a touchdown to Caleb Jones to give Glacier a 35-0 lead.

Senior kicker Brandon Purdy, also a captain on the Wolfpack soccer team, booted a school-record 48-yard field goal to cap the scoring for Glacier. The record was eight yards longer than the school’s previous mark, set by Purdy last season.

“I’m proud of him,” Bennett said. “He missed a few in practice yesterday. For him to come back and focus in, he kicked the ball really well tonight.”

Glacier’s defense responded to a spotty performance against Great Falls C.M. Russell to nearly shut out the defending state champion Hawks. Third-string quarterback Calahan O’Reilly threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Robert Samson on fourth-and-goal with 1:21 left to get Bozeman on the board. A conversion run from Finn Vaughankraska made the final score 38-8.

“When somebody finds some holes in your defense and exposes you, you go and learn from it,” Bennett said. “It was a great job by the defense for shoring that up this week. We still brought our pressure, but our coverage was there behind it.”

McChesney was 15 for 26 for 259 yards passing and 32 yards rushing. Trefney led the Wolfpack on the ground with 53 yards rushing on nine attempts. McCamley had 113 receiving yards on five catches.

Glacier outgained Bozeman 423-167, holding the Hawks to just 31 rushing yards.

The win was the first for Glacier against Bozeman since a 7-3 victory at home in 2012. Bozeman had won three straight in the series, including the state championship last season and the state semifinals in 2012.

“Without us saying anything, you can tell it means a lot to finally beat this team,” Bennett said. “The team that makes you put your equipment away every year, you remember that one a little bit more. I know it means a lot to them.”
