Arvid Kern "A.K." Sheldon passed away on Sept. 3, 2014, at the Hospice House in Hayden with his daughter Carol and wife Kathy by his side.
A.K. was born in Wendell, Idaho, on Nov. 23, 1924, to Milo Sheldon and Martha McCorkle. He graduated from Jerome High School in 1942 and entered the U.S. Navy in December 1942 as an aviation cadet.
A.K. graduated in June of 1943 as a naval aviator with the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). He then served his country in the American and Chinese theater from 1942-46 retiring briefly as a first Lt. USMC rejoining the USMC in 1947 where he served a tour of duty in Korea from 1950-51. In 1957, A.K. retired from the USMC and began serving the U.S. Army SIC with overseas duty in Europe and Burma, retiring from the U.S. Army in 1966. He then worked for Xerox as a technician from 1966-1982.
A.K. resided in the Coeur d'Alene area from 1967 until his death. He was active in local slow pitch softball and golf.
In 1947 A.K. married Mauvine Gallahar who passed away in 1965. He was preceded in death by his first wife, grandson Gary Crosby, parents Milo and Martha Sheldon, and brother Charles Sheldon.
Survivors of A.K.'s first marriage are Carol Smith (Don) of St. John, Wash., Karen Averitt of St. John; and three grandsons. A.K. is also survived by Katherine Shaver, whom he married in 1979; stepdaughters Stephanie Gamlem, Sue Schuller, and Stacy Shaver (Eric); six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A celebration of A.K.'s life is 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Post Falls Community Presbyterian Church, 417 N. William St., Post Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice House of North Idaho or the Post Falls Community Presbyterian Church.
