No. 1 Glacier on the road to face Hellgate

After exorcising its demons last week against Bozeman, Glacier football is riding high and ranked atop the state.
While the No. 1 Wolfpack (3-0) would seem to be heavy favorites to win this weekend at Missoula Hellgate (0-3), the team hasn’t lost its focus.
“I think from the very start this group has taken the right attitude with that,” Glacier coach Grady Bennett said. “When you’re ranked No. 1, you’re going to be favored in every game.
“The challenge is you can overlook everybody or you can decide that you need to get better every week in pursuit of our ultimate goal. Every week is a stepping stone. Every week is a chance to get better, every Friday night improve our team.”
Glacier was sterling last week, compiling 423 yards of offense against Bozeman while scoring touchdowns on four of its six first-half possessions. The Wolfpack is looking to continue that momentum against Hellgate, which statistically has the second-best pass defense in the state this season, allowing less than 100 yards per game.
“Our focus last week was starting well and playing well,” Bennett said. “Now we want to continue to do that. To get better, there’s little things that you find even after a really nice solid team effort like against Bozeman, that you can improve and get better at.
“You just hone in on those this week and get really crisp with it, fix any of those little mistakes that you have.”
Hellgate is coming off a 51-0 drubbing at the hands of No. 2 Helena High last week, and has surrendered more points than any team in Class AA this season.
While the Knights have had a tough start to the season, they still have talent, possessing one of the biggest teams in the West.
“Their offensive front is really big,” Bennett said. “They’re huge. And their backs are big and run hard. We know they’re going to really try to be physical and line it up, run it right at us ... That will definitely be a test for us.”
Glacier has won its last six meetings with Hellgate, scoring an average of 45 points in the contests and winning by an average of 33 points. In the last three seasons, the Wolfpack has scored 69, 64 and 40 points against Hellgate.
While Glacier’s style has matched well against the Knights, the team isn’t taking Hellgate lightly this week.
“We had our best week of practice this week.” Bennett said. “It could’ve easily been a letdown week. You look for those signs that maybe they’re not plugged in or taking it seriously, but we had our best week from start to finish that we’ve had.”
The game begins at 7 p.m. today at Missoula County Stadium.
