The Class AA state golf tournament is still two weeks away, but for a pair of Glacier golfers, they appear ready for that event right now.

Glacier’s Cody Sherrill won his first medalist honor of the season with a dominating wire-to-wire performance while Teigan Avery showed some grit as she had to rally from two strokes down on the final day to claim the girls individual title at the Kalispell Invitational.

The two-day event came to a close on Friday at Northern Pines Golf Club.

Sherrill, a senior, closed with a 1-under 71 for a 138 total and a comfortable eight-shot victory over runner-up Easton Enott of C.M. Russell.

Sherrill led Enott by six shots after his 67 on Thursday at Buffalo Hill Golf Club.

“I was really comfortable on my home course with that lead,” Sherrill said.

“I just wanted to play my game and go out and shoot a score.”

Having that much of a cushion after the first day helped his approach for the final 18 holes.

“It takes a lot of (pressure) off,” he said.

“You can relax a little more.

“My swing and everything kind of clicked today,” he said.

“Started at (No.) 10 with a birdie. After that, just smooth sailing.”

He did bogey the fifth hole, found the water on one of his shots, and battled with the rough on holes 5, 7, 8 and 9. But that was the extent of his troubles.

“My short game was really good,” he said.

“Today I felt confident.”

Flathead’s Ryan Keenan, 75-72—147, finished third.

Rounding out the top five were Glacier’s Tom Mann, 77-70—147, and Scott Larson, 75-76—151.

Mann had the low round on the last day with his 2-under 70.

Glacier’s boys, 593, won the team title. C.M. Russell was second, 631.

Flathead, 639, was fourth.

Avery matched par on the links course with her 72 to make up ground on first-day leader Coral Schulz of Whitefish to win by one shot with a 151 total.

Schulz closed with a 3-over 75.

Avery had five birdies along with five bogies at Northern Pines.

“Ended with a bogey ... that was a little frustrating,” Avery said.

“Today I played better,” she quickly added.

“Had better shots. My putter was good ... no three putts. I just wanted to focus on my own game and to play the best I can play.”

It was Avery’s second straight-tournament title after three runner-up performances.

For Schulz, it was the first time she has not been a meet medalist this fall.

“It was really tight after the first nine,” Schulz said of her battle with Avery. “She shot 1-under, I shot even. I went 3-over on the back. She deserved (to win it), she really did.”

Schulz will be a heavy favorite to captured the Class A state golf individual title in two weeks in Hamilton.

“It’s been a great season (so far),” she said.

“My team is awesome, the coaches are awesome and the atmosphere is great to be a part of.”

Abigail Davidson of Great Falls High, 82-80—162 was a distant third.

Kate Fyall of Whitefish, 87-83—170, and Casey Babinecz of Great Falls High, 88-82—170, tied for fourth.

Flathead’s Jenna Jenson, 85-87—172, was seventh.

Team wise for girls, Great Falls High, 695, finished first, four shots ahead of Glacier. Whitefish, 703, was third and Flathead, 782, fifth.

The Class AA state tournament will be held in Bozeman.
