SANDPOINT — On what will soon become the second floor of a duplex condominium, Quentin Little Brave sits astride a stack of straw bales, cinching them together with a length of blue cord.

Around the corner, Jeff Shorman draws his trowel across a gray mass of lime plaster and, in one swooping motion, applies it directly onto the bales that make up another wall.

In a nearby open space that will become the central courtyard for this multi-unit project, two men talk about the reasons behind this alternative construction showcase that is shaping up at the corner of Larch Street and Ella Avenue.

Called the Larch Street Courtyard, the development will eventually include two single-family dwellings and a pair of duplexes, all situated on a moderately sized lot that stands to make a big statement when it comes to its innovative approach to local housing.
