Glacier and Butte haven’t played a lot of football games against each other, but every one has been interesting.

The Wolfpack played their first game in program history against the Bulldogs in 2007, then a year later earned its first victory as a program against Butte. Then, after a four-year hiatus, the two combined to play two of the most exciting games of the 2013 season a year ago.

In the first contest, at Butte, saw 1,222 yards of offense and 99 points between the two teams. Glacier returned three interceptions for touchdowns and forced six turnovers but still had to keep scoring to stem the pressure from record-setting Butte quarterback Dallas Cook’s 606 yards of offense and six touchdowns.

In the second game, in Kalispell for the opening week of the state playoffs, was even wilder. The teams combined for 117 points and 1,068 yards and Glacier needed another interception return for a touchdown and a recovery on an onside kick to prevent the then-state champs from pulling off the upset.

With those two wins in the rearview mirror, Glacier coach Grady Bennett is hoping not to get into that situation again as the No. 1 Wolfpack (4-0) host Butte (2-2) for homecoming tonight.

“Our focus this week has been hoping to not get into the same type of shootouts,” Bennett said.

“Shootouts are fun for the fans. Those two games last year were probably as entertaining as a high school game can be. Those are fun to watch. But, they really stress you out as a coach. Especially as a defensive coach. I know our defensive coaches would like to not get into the same type of shootout again.”

While Dallas Cook is gone from the record-setting Butte group from last season, the Bulldogs’ new quarterback doesn’t stray too far from the big hurler. Dallas’ younger brother Dylan has taken the reins for Butte this season and is already starting to show some of the same promise.

The younger Cook leads the state in total offense, throwing for 1,170 yards and running for 100, averaging 317.5 yards a game in four contests this season.

“It’s different personnel but the same scheme,” Bennett said.

“Same quarterback in essence, because he’s Dallas’ little brother. He’s a year younger, but still, you see the same types of things that he can do with the threat to both run and pass.”

The Bulldogs still have a deep receiving corps, led by state sprinting champ Dalton Daum. Connor Lane, Brock LaPier and Paul Campbell are also in the top 10 of the state in receiving for a team that leads the state in passing offense.

After last year’s shootouts, Glacier hopes it has its defense shored up for the Butte attack.

“We won’t know. You think you do and you watch film and try to make adjustments, but we won’t know until Friday night,” Bennett said.

“You watch and you try to make some adjustments, hoping that it will pay off. We’ll find out. I’d like to say yes, but I think the answer’s going to be proven when we kick it off.”

Glacier believes its offense is ready after strong performances against Bozeman and Hellgate the last two weeks. The Wolfpack has scored 106 points and has gotten off to strong starts after slowly working into its first two games of the season.

“I think the last two weeks we’ve been very efficient, very focused,” Bennett said.

“We’ve executed very well. That was our goal after that second game against CMR. To start well and really execute and try to score every drive.

“The last two weeks we’ve done a great job with that. We just need to keep doing our business on offense, regardless of what’s going on on the defensive side. But we also need to be ready to respond if it does get into a shootout.”

The game will start at 7 p.m. at Legends Stadium.
