Although Flathead was far from full strength for its track dual with Great Falls C.M. Russell on Thursday at Legends Stadium, it did not prevent the Braves and Bravettes from turning in some impressive results.

“Those kids who showed up competed hard,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said.

“They didn’t come to just participate. They worked hard ... did what they were asked to do.”

The reason Flathead was not fully loaded for this outing was spring break. Many of its student-athletes were on family trips. So for Hodge, who has 87-plus on his roster, “we had less than 42 here today,” he said.

“We were missing at least a third of the girls,” Bravettes coach Tom Gillespie added.

“Our top sprinter was gone and a few other good jumpers.”

Flathead’s boys still finished the day by winning nine of the 17 events, had the second-place finisher in three other events and went 1-2-3 in the high jump. The Braves scored in every event but the 1,600 relay en route to a tight 73-72 win.

The Bravettes had a slightly larger margin of victory, 78-64.

Janae Moon powered the Bravettes by winning four events — 200 (28.84), high jump (4-11), long jump (16-5 3/4) and triple jump (32-8 1/4).

“She did great ... just missed qualifying in the long (jump) for state,” Gillespie said.

“She’s right there for it (in that event). We’re looking for good things from her.”

Teammate Gillian Maness dominated the distance events, taking firsts in the 1,600 (5:19.95) and 3,200 (11:43.17). Gillespie was pleased with her times.

Maness competed at Stillwater Christian School last year.

The Bravettes had nine firsts total and finished 1-2-3 in five events (200, 800, 1,600, high jump and triple jump).

“A good day,” Gillespie said overall, “especially for our second meet of the year. We have a lot of new kids, so with this meet they were able to get a little experience before we jump into the heart of the season. That starts this week.”

Flathead’s other two individual winners were Elizabeth Thompson in the 800 (2:34.04) and Meridith Wilson in the pole vault (8-6).

The Bravettes also won the 1,600 relay.

Scoring was based on the top three finishes in most events. Only the first place team in the relays added points to the team total.

Individual event winners for the Flathead boys were Sylas Schutt in the 1,600 (4:39.64), Jake Perrin in the 3,200 (9:46.02), Tyler Davis in the 300 hurdles (43.71), Andy Thomas in the high jump (5-7), Bobby Lowry in the long jump (20-10), Keaton Krantz in the triple jump (39-11), Eli Brown in the shot put (44-7) and Dalton Manning in the javelin (150-4).

Flathead won every field event but the discus.

Lowry, a freshman, also placed third in the 100 and 200.

Perrin, who focused on the 800 and 1,600 a year ago, competed in the 3,200 for the first time.

Perrin edged Schutt by five seconds in that race.

“Both times (were excellent),” Hodge said of his distance aces.

“They are great leaders. They don’t find ways to do shortcuts at practice. They work hard. They do what they are asked to do.”

Hodge was extremely pleased with the effort of his 400 relay squad — Lowry, Josh McCracken, Ethan Timm and Krantz. Put together at the last minute, they ran a 45.83 to CMR’s 45.89.

“They hit three perfect handoffs,” Hodge said of what the difference was between first and second place in the relay.

“They ran a good race. I’ll run those kids again.”

That could happen as soon as Tuesday. Flathead will compete in the Time Trials at Legends Stadium.
