SANDPOINT - A North Idaho man awaiting trial on multiple lewd conduct charges is facing a felony vehicle theft charge in Montana, according to court documents.
As a result, Bonner County Prosecutor Louis Marshall is moving to increase the bail in Ernest Ray Johnson's case. A hearing on the state's motion is set for April 10 in 1st District Court.
A Bonner County grand jury indicted Johnson last year on six counts of lewd conduct with minors. He was originally held in lieu of $1 million bail, but that sum was reduced to $100,000 and $20,000 as the case moved toward a trial date.
A property bond was put up last July to secure Johnson's pretrial release, court documents show.
Marshall moved to increase Johnson's bail in light of a criminal complaint in Lincoln County, Mont., charging him with theft. Johnson is accused of taking a woman's Subaru near Troy on March 4. The vehicle was located the following day in Post Falls, court records indicate.
Johnson, 34, is scheduled to be tried on the lewd conduct charges later this month, although a hearing on a motion to dismiss the case is pending. That motion is also slated to be addressed on April 10.
The grand jury that indicted Johnson also indicted his wife, Heidi, on an identical set of lewd conduct charges. Heidi Johnson's parents, Frank and Diane Hankey, were indicted on similar charges.
Heidi Johnson and the Hankeys are also awaiting trial.
All four defendants have pleaded not guilty to the offenses of which they're charged.
