A Spokane Valley man was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly leading local law enforcement on a chase.

Robert M. Currier, 34, was booked into the Kootenai County jail for felony eluding a police officer, grand theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

According to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, a report of a suspicious person at the Prairie Shopping Center in Hayden was received by the county's 911 center around 12:15 p.m.

"The caller said the driver of the vehicle was 'acting very strangely' walking around," KCSO Lt. Stu Miller said. "The suspect was then seen leaving the area in a Chevy Avalanche with Washington license plates."

The vehicle had been reported stolen from Spokane earlier in the day.

A KCSO deputy spotted the Avalanche westbound on Interstate 90 from U.S. 95. and drove behind the vehicle to await other responders.

Currier exited the freeway at Highway 41 in Post Falls and turned northbound toward Rathdrum.

"He began running red lights, passing people on the right and left and speeding before anyone tried to stop him," Miller said. "Due to the hazards the suspect was presenting, the deputy activated his lights and siren."

Idaho State Police then joined the pursuit at Highway 41 and Poeleline Avenue and took the lead since the chase was on a state highway.

ISP Spokeswoman Teresa Baker said Currier drove through a ditch before the chase ended.

"He went through a ditch, up the other side and continued before he eventually stopped, got out of the car and surrendered," Baker said.

Currier was arrested along Highway 41 near Lancaster Road south of Rathdrum.
