A response to Rep. Zinke's townhall

Well you have to give Rep. Zinke credit for showing up as that’s more than Daines does. Unless you are a wealthy donor in Whitefish of course.

I was unable to submit my question to Zinke at the meeting so I will pose it now. Why does the GOP seem so intent on destroying the post office and thus eliminating so many veterans’ jobs? They don’t use a dime of taxpayer money — on the contrary taxpayers currently owe them roughly $70 billion and they have about $55 billion in the 75-year pre-funded health-care account for retirees. Were it not for this idiotic pre-funding law inflicted by a lame-duck GOP Congress they would be showing multi-billion dollar profits instead of curtailing service and laying off veterans.

Also I notice nobody braced him on voting to move our public lands into private ownership. If he has his way the only folks allowed to boat on our many lakes will be to buy lakefront property. As for his comment that getting the government involved in cleaning up toxic dumps — we’ve seen how quickly mining and timber corporations have rushed to clean up their messes without federal action! I’m pretty sure Glacial is the word we’re looking for.

One last thing: The terrorists who flew those planes on 9/11 were NOT Iranians, 15 of them were from Saudi Arabia, as was Bin Laden, the financial backer and instigator of the attack. Saudi Arabia remains the No. 1 source of funding for al-Qaida. Failing to reach a deal with Iran guarantees they will build a bomb within five years, the deal now before us ensures they will not do so for a minimum of 15 years.

James Madison wrote, “A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defence agst. foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home.”

State “militias” like the National Guard were intended to fill the gap and this is why we have the Second Amendment, NOT to give Bubba and his drinking buddies permission to arm themselves with military weapons. —Robert Petersen, Evergreen
