Tennis: Glacier, Flathead battle at FVCC
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 years, 8 months AGO
The largest high schools in the Flathead will battle it out at Flathead Valley Community College in the first installment of this year’s crosstown tennis rivalry with Glacier and Flathead netters taking to the courts at 3 p.m.
For the first time, today’s crosstown dual is a nonconference matchup. Cyclically, the two schools switch conferences; Flathead moved from the Western conference to the Northern where they will remain until 2017.
The Wolfpack boys boast a formidable one-two punch in their singles lineup, trotting out senior Hunter Blalack and junior Spencer Johnson.
Blalack and Johnson have found some early-season success and have combined for seven wins and one loss just four matches into the 2015 campaign.
Blalack, a state qualifier from a year ago, gave defending Class AA state champion Noah Strizich of Helena Capital all he could handle during a 6-4, 6-4 defeat in Missoula on Saturday after trouncing Lane Ryerson — last year’s runner-up from Helena High — 6-1, 6-1.
The Glacier girls won seven matches against the Helena schools in Missoula, tying Helena, 4-4, and falling to Capital 5-3.
McKenna Tinseth and McKenna Johnson won both of their singles matches.
The Flathead Braves and Bravettes have yet to win a dual this season, but have had positive performances throughout the young season.
Jenna Jensen is 2-2 on the year, most recently taking down Missoula Big Sky’s Tayler Johnson 7-5, 6-2.
The Braves doubles combination of Ryan Keenan and Rydell Welk won over Big Sky’s Alec Erickson and Zach Nachtigal, 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday. It was the only win on the weekend, but the second doubles victory of the season. Tristan Dills and Eric West took down Jacob Bernhardt and Ian DeBoo of Great Falls C.M. Russell in a thrilling 6-7, 7-7, 10-3 during the first weekend of competition.
Varsity and junior varsity will both start play at 3.
