SPIRIT LAKE - A Boundary County man's vehicle crash toppled a power pole into the bed of his truck Wednesday afternoon, knocking out power for nine hours.
The crash and power outage in front of Miller's Harvest Foods on Highway 41 in Spirit Lake caused the grocery store to dispose of some perishable foods such as deli meat.
Jasper Naumann, 39, of Boundary County, was northbound in a Chevy truck on Highway 41 around 2:45 p.m. when the vehicle ran into an Avista Utilities power pole.
"The pole snapped at the base, went over the cab and ended up in the truck bed," said Spirit Lake police Chief Keith Hutcheson. "The truck hit the pole so hard that it pulled wires out of an electrical box about a half block away."
Hutcheson said Naumann told Officer Jake Brazle that he fell asleep prior to the crash. There were no injuries. No citations were issued and alcohol was not a factor.
The outage caused Miller's to temporarily close. Owner Kevin Miller was unavailable for comment on Thursday.
Power was restored around 11:30 p.m.
Spirit Lake Fire assisted the police department with the accident.
