The loud boom of an earthquake centered near Somers gave a jolt to residents across the Flathead Valley early Saturday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 3.6 quake centered about 2 miles from Somers happened at 12:45 a.m. and was based about 4.4 miles below the earth’s surface.

Residents in Whitefish reported feeling the quick shake. According to USGS tracking data, the quake was most intense in the north valley area and was felt as far south as Polson.

This is the second earthquake to rattle Whitefish in the past six months. On Nov. 14, 2014, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake centered near Whitefish rattled homes across the valley.
