Rausie Louise Solberg Cummings, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at Edgewood Vista in Kalispell.
Rausie was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Big Timber to Selmer H. and Rausie Roecher Solberg. She attended school in Big Timber and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in 1943. She went on to graduate in home economics education from Montana State College at Bozeman in 1947, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi, Spurs and Mortar Board.
On Aug. 17, 1947, she married Bayliss Evans Cummings Jr., and they lived in Bozeman and Roundup before moving to Kalispell in 1950.
She was active in early childhood education. She taught private kindergarten classes from 1958 until 1976. She also taught in the Epworth Methodist Church Sunday School and was a longtime member of the church choir. She was a member of PEO since 1952. For a number of years, she assisted Bayliss in the family business, Central Data Service.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carolyn Ann, and by her husband, Bayliss.
She is survived by three sons and their families, all of Kalispell, Steven E. Cummings and his wife, Susan, grandsons David and Jay; Charles A. Cummings and his wife, Laurie, granddaughters Elizabeth and Emily; and John M. Cummings and his wife, Lois, grandchildren Julie and Christopher Jon. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, Emma, Margo, Bayliss, Beckett, Oliver, Charlie, Maxwell, Gabriel, Anika, Elijah, Eleanor and Brody.
Rausie always had a terrific, loving attitude. She came to be called “Grandma Honey” by her toddler grandchildren after asking them, for example, to “give your coat to Grandma, Honey.” The nickname stuck and was perfectly appropriate to Rausie’s sweet personality — no one was sweeter. She brought a lot of joy to a lot of people all through her life, and she’ll be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service to celebrate Rausie’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the Epworth United Methodist Church, with luncheon to follow at the church.
Donations in memory of Rausie may be made to Epworth Methodist Church or to Glacier Symphony and Chorale.
