PREP SOFTBALL: Baldrees lift Sandpoint past Lakeland
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 9 months AGO
SANDPOINT - Freshman Bri Baldree was sharp on the mound, and junior sister Cody Baldree provided the run support, helping lead the Sandpoint Bulldogs to an 11-0 win over the Lakeland Hawks in the opener of a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader at windy Sandpoint Middle School on Saturday.
Bri Baldree spun a four-hitter while striking out four, and Cody Baldree laced a triple among her three hits, driving in seven runs and scoring three more as the Bulldogs (2-5, 1-1 4A IEL) put up crooked numbers in four frames. Sam Holland added two hits and three runs, but it was the team's defensive effort that caught Sandpoint coach Elizabeth Hawkins' eye.
"Our defense was as solid as I've ever seen us play," described Hawkins. "We shut them down with our defense and Bri's pitching."
Lakeland (1-8, 1-1 4A IEL) came alive offensively in the second game, as Shayna Woolley ripped a double and triple among her four hits and four RBIs, and Emily Vanderhoof added three hits and three runs in a 13-9 win. The Hawks plated five runs in the top of the six to blow the game open.
"We really worked together as a team," Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. "We did a great job bringing it together as a team."
Topi Elsfelder scored four runs for the Bulldogs in game two, and Hawkins praised the strong relief effort of Nycole Moreland, who inherited a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and got out of it to keep the game close.
Sandpoint travels to Moscow for a IEL doubleheader on Monday.

Timberlake drops two
at Libby Invitational
LIBBY, Mont. - Shelby Starr had two hits for the Tigers in a loss to the Loggers in the Libby Invitational.
"They hit the ball really well and we didn't in that game," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said.
Timberlake also fell 25-0 to Frenchtown as Bronco pitcher Morgan Ray - who has signed to pitch at Ohio State - struck out 15 and walked one in a no-hitter.
Timberlake (3-7), which committed eight errors against Frenchtown, travels to Priest River on Tuesday.
"She's very, very good," Menti said. "I was pretty happy though. We got the bat on the ball a little bit. But it doesn't matter when you commit eight errors. We had our chances to get out of the first inning with only a couple of runs being scored, but we kind of fell apart."
