Bail stands in California extradition case

SANDPOINT - A bail reduction was denied Friday for a Bonner County man awaiting extradition back to California to answer to forgery charges in San Bernardino County.
David Mark Gaynor sought to be released on his own recognizance because his financial assets have been seized by law enforcement.
"Police issued a search warrant taking my life savings," Gaynor said during a videoconference hearing in magistrate court.
Gaynor said he is a self-employed enforcer and collector of judgments entered in court cases.
Gaynor, 52, was originally arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in San Diego County Superior Court on charges of burglary and forgery. That warrant was withdrawn and replaced with a $100,000 San Bernardino County warrant.
Bonner County Deputy Prosecutor Valerie Fenton said the two California counties agreed that San Bernardino County would be first in line to prosecute Gaynor. She added that a governor's warrant from that state, which would effect Gaynor's extradition from Idaho, is expected in about a week.
"I would ask the court to leave the case as it is," Fenton said.
Chief Deputy Public Defender Dan Taylor said Gaynor has a connection to the community and is not shying from the adjudication of his case.
"He can't flee even if he wanted to and wants to challenge the merits of the case," said Taylor.
Gaynor said he has only failed to appear in court once and has a roommate here that he's known for about two years.
But a single contact in the community in two years of residency was too tenuous a connection for Judge Debra Heise, who also noted that Gaynor's profession involves travel.
Gaynor, also known as David Anderson, David Walker and David Mark Carter, was arrested on March 10 while trying to access funds at Columbia Bank in Sandpoint. Authorities in California advised Sandpoint Police that those funds were the ill-gotten gains of Gaynor's criminal conduct, according to court documents.
Since his arrest, Gaynor has filed a $500,000 claim for damages against the city and county alleging authorities in Idaho and California have conspired to circumvent his constitutional right to be free of unlawful searches and seizures.
