Flathead, Glacier meet for 8th time in crosstown track
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 9 years, 9 months AGO
Flathead and Glacier will meet for the eighth time in crosstown track action today at 3 p.m. at Legends Stadium.
Glacier swept the action a year ago, taking the boys team title 82-63 while the girls won by nearly the same score, 83-68.
Flathead leads the overall series with the boys ahead 4-3 and the girls are up 5-2.
Flathead’s boys and Glacier’s girls are both coming off impressive showings last weekend at the Missoula Invitational.
Flathead tallied 77 points to finish first. Corvallis was second at 71 1/2.
Glacier was second with 79 1/2 points. Big Sky’s girls won it with a 133 score.
Flathead’s Sylas Schutt, who won the 1,600 and 3,200, was named the boys athlete of the meet.
Teammate Jess Beaman was a double winner in the long and triple jumps.
Flathead’s Keaton Krantz was second in the long jump and fourth in the triple.
“It surprised me,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said of the win in Missoula.
“It was our fourth meet of the year. The kids are coming along, getting better.”
Flathead will be missing Jake Perrin, on a field trip, and Chade Gonter, who is nursing an injury. Perrin is a distance runner. Gonter is a hurdler and high jumper.
Glacier’s girls had two individual winners in Missoula — freshman Annie Hill in the 1,600 and senior Keyawna Larson in the javelin — and also had the winning time in the 1,600 relay.
“It was a really good day,” Glacier coach Jerry Boschee said.
“Our sophomores stepped up and carried us. It was fun to watch them compete.”
Those sophomores were Brynn McChesney, hurdles and long jump, Ahna Kreitenger, hurdles and sprints, Nikki Krueger, shot put and discus, and Bailey Smith, middle distance.
While 50-degree weather and high winds were a factor in Missoula, athletes today may have to contend with another ugly forecast. Temperatures are expected in the mid-40s with a 90-percent chance for rain.
“Survival of the fittest,” Boschee said.
