Resort reminds skiers, hikers of post-season restrictions

Flathead National Forest officials want skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers to be aware of post-season restrictions at Whitefish Mountain Resort.

For 14 days following the end of chairlift operation at the ski resort, uphill and downhill travel on Big Mountain is restricted to the East Route, which includes travel up Moe-Mentum to the Summit House.

Travel up the front side of Big Mountain is prohibited during this time. The restrictions will begin Monday, April 13, and continue through Sunday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for both uphill and downhill travel.

Forest Service officials say the restrictions are in effect to protect public safety, as the resort’s lift and slope maintenance activities include use of heavy equipment on service roads and ski runs.

The restrictions are not in effect after 4 p.m. and prior to 8 a.m. these restrictions are not in effect. However, visitors should be aware that snow coverage is intermittent, service roads may be plowed, and unmarked berms, cuts and other hazards may exist throughout the resort area.

The East Route begins at the Base Lodge, crosses the bridge toward the Ski and Ride School and Clinic building, and ascends lower Inspiration, Expressway, Moe-Mentum and the Ant Hill to the Summit.

The route is marked by red diamond signs with an arrow and the word “UPHILL.”

Maps showing the approved travel route are posted at the Base Lodge, Village, Lift Plaza, and on-line at: http://skiwhitefish.com/favorites/trailmaps. Pets must be leashed at all times within the resort boundary.
