Track and field: Glacier sweep crosstown
Joseph Terry Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 9 years, 9 months AGO
The Glacier boys and girls swept the crosstown track dual on Tuesday at Legends Stadium, battling the wind and cold on a dreary day in Kalispell.
The Wolfpack girls set four new records at the meet as they ran away with an 87-58 dual victory, highlighted by freshman Annie Hill in the 3,200-meter race. Hill, the Class AA state cross country champion, obliterated the old crosstown dual meet record, finishing in a state-qualifying time of 10 minutes, 36.34 seconds. She beat the previous record, set in 2011 by Glacier’s Rachael Hart, by more than 90 seconds.
“I’ve never run the two mile before,” Hill said. “I was just looking for a good time. I think I got it.”
Flathead’s Kaitlin Wride, who finished second in the race in 11:36.72, and Mackenzie Bouma, who was third in 12:02.34, also would have topped the old mark, each finishing with state qualifying times.
Wride also qualified in the 1,600 by winning the event in 5:26.66. just .44 seconds off tying the meet record set by Glacier’s Heather Fraley in 2011.
Glacier’s Melanie Gassaway broke the oldest remaining record at the meet, winning the shot put with a throw of 37-3 1/2. That mark topped the old record by eight inches, set by Glacier’s Emilee Hashley in the first crosstown dual in 2008.
Wolfpack senior Keyawna Larson broke her own record in the javelin, throwing 135 feet, 9 inches despite the wind picking up on her last two throws. Her winning throw topped her record mark from last season by 18 inches.
Glacier’s Bailey Smith set the new meet record in the 800, winning with a state-qualifying mark in 2:22.00 to best the mark set by former Glacier standout Anna Deleray by more than two seconds. Smith and Hill were on the winning 1,600 relay team.
Glacier’s Ahna Kreitinger, who won the 400, and Abigail Fiske, winner of the triple jump, met state qualifying marks.
Flathead’s Monica White was the only girl to win more than one individual event, taking the 100 and the 200.
No records were broken on the boys side of the dual, though Flathead’s Jess Beaman set a state qualifying mark in the discus, winning the event with a toss of 148-10. He also won the triple jump with a span of 42-4.
“I’ve been working hard in the off-season,” Beaman said. “I would’ve liked to do better. It was just one of those days.”
Glacier’s Austin Cook qualified for state in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, beating out Beaman, the winner of both jumps at the Missoula Invite last weekend, by 10 inches. Cook also won the 300 hurdles, outpacing the field in 42.12.
Flathead’s Sylas Schutt won both the 800 (2:02.23) and 1,600 (4:36.31). Braves sophomore Micah Bucy won the high jump in his first time competing in the event, clearing 5-11.
The boys and girls teams for each school will be split this weekend. The boys will travel to Butte on Saturday for the Swede Dahlberg Invitational and the girls will compete at the Great Falls Invitational.
