Softball: Glacier tops Flathead twice

A glistening sun covered Kidsport Complex on Thursday, setting the stage for two phenomenal Class AA softball games between the Glacier Wolfpack and Flathead Bravettes, and the girls did not disappoint.
The first crosstown doubleheader of the season featured a 12-0 no-hitter and a 2-1 walk-off victory, both in favor of the host Wolfpack (7-1 overall, 5-1 Western AA).
There was nary a hit to be had for the Bravettes (0-9, 0-5) in Game 1 of the twin bill because Glacier’s Ali Williams was untouchable.
The junior pitched five shutout innings of no-hit ball while striking out 12 batters on just 69 pitches. It was her second straight no-hitter after blanking Helena High on Saturday.
Williams struck out 10 in a row — three-and-a-third innings without allowing her teammates to field a ball.
“I think I was just feeling good since the beginning of the game. It was one of those games where everything was working well. It all clicked,” Williams said.
“It depends on the hitter, but (against Flathead) I felt like I could work a lot of my riseball and fastball. (The riseball) has kind of been my favorite pitch so far this year. It’s been helping me out.”
Although the Wolfpack didn’t have an extra-base hit in the opener, it manufactured 12 runs on 10 hits with plenty of help from Flathead.
Three walks, two passed balls and a stolen base set up Glacier’s three-run first inning, highlighted by Kayleena Ikeda’s two-run RBI single.
The Wolfpack’s biggest inning, four runs in the bottom of the fourth, saw Glacier collect four base hits accompanied by two errors by Flathead.
Christina DuFour and Kayla Russell each went 2 for 3 for Glacier and Erin McHugh was a perfect 2 for 2 in the opener.
The Bravettes could have rolled over after committing five errors and losing by the 10-run mercy rule, but they did just the opposite.
Flathead came out strong behind pitcher Kylee Beccari — the same starter as Game 1.
The sophomore settle down in the night cap, allowing just three hits in seven innings of work.
“I thought Kylee pitched strong,” Bravettes coach Tasia Gates said. “We thought she pitched well in the first game, (Glacier) just had some good hits, so we wanted to start her (in Game 2). She pitched so strongly we just kept her in there. We had no reason to take her out. It was really impressive.
“The fact that we recovered and played the second game so well was great. All around, we were making smart plays and that eliminated all those extra runs and kept us in the game.”
Beccari was locked in a duel with Glacier’s McHugh, who got the starting nod in Game 2.
Beccari gave up one run in the bottom of the first while pitching out of a base-loaded jam.
McHugh surrendered the tying run in the top of the second.
Flathead’s Kylee Meredith led off with a base hit and scored on an error from a ground ball off the bat of Kaitlin Torgerson.
The teams went scoreless the rest of the way until the decisive seventh inning.
Glacier catcher Christine Connolly led off the bottom of that inning with a walk. She advanced to second on a fielder’s choice when DuFour ripped a line drive off of Beccari’s glove. Beccari regrouped, found the ball and fired to first for the put out.
Then Russell stepped into the box.
The senior jumped on the third pitch she saw, ripping a walk-off single to right field, scoring Connolly from second to give Glacier the sweep.
“For Kayla to come up with the big game-winning hit was huge. Kayla, of all the kids we have in our program, has so much experience and that’s where it pays off, in those big moments,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said. “She’s a four-year starter for us. She’s always in the top of our lineup. Those big pressure at-bats seem to be where she shines the best.
“They’re starting to see we don’t need to live or die by the long ball. Hopefully we’ll be able to keep finding ways to get those runs in when we need them.”
Flathead hosts Missoula Hellgate on Saturday at Conrad Complex for a 1 p.m. Western AA contest.
Glacier travels to Hellgate today at 5 p.m. before visiting Butte on Saturday for a double-header starting at noon.
