POST FALLS — An 85-year-old woman died in a two-vehicle collision on this afternoon at the intersection of Pleasantview Road and Prairie Avenue in the Post Falls area.

The woman’s name was being withheld tonight pending notification to her next of kin. She was found deceased at the scene.

The female was westbound in a 1995 Ford Aerostar van on Prairie around 3 p.m. when she failed to yield at a Stop sign to a semi that was northbound on Pleasantview, according to the preliminary investigation by the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.

"The female’s van struck the side of the semi trailer just ahead of the trailer’s tires," a KCSO press release issued tonight states.

The woman was the only occupant in the van.

"Sheriff’s traffic investigators are having difficulty locating her family as she was known to be living a transient lifestyle," the press release states. 

Rupinder Shokar, 43, British Columbia, the driver of the Coastal Pacific Xpress, Inc. semi pulling a 53-foot box trailer, was not injured. 

The crash occurred just west of Kootenai County's transfer station. Numerous items from inside the van were scattered at the crash scene at the intersection and in an adjacent field. 

There were no obvious signs at the scene that alcohol or drugs were a factor, according to the KCSO. Kootenai County Fire and Rescue assisted the KCSO at the scene.

An investigation continues. Autopsy and toxicology results won’t be available for several weeks.
