POST FALLS - A fugitive who allegedly held a woman at knifepoint and barricaded himself inside a Post Falls home for more than five hours surrendered Wednesday night.

Jared E. Fausett, 24, Coeur d'Alene, was arrested for three counts of probation violation and one count of fugitive from justice.

The other occupant of the home, Melanie J. Moralez, 27, Post Falls, was arrested on warrants for shoplifting, criminal contempt, injury to child, possession of a controlled substance, concealing evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The owner of the home in the 2500 block of Bradley Drive near Evergreen Cemetery, who was not home during the ordeal, negotiated with Fausett to surrender, said Post Falls Police Capt. Pat Knight.

"The homeowner claims he left the house with no one inside, but he came around and was very cooperative," said Knight, who spoke with the homeowner during the incident.

The multi-agency North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force received a tip that Fausett was at the home and responded just after 4 p.m.

After Fausett didn't respond to messages sent over a public address system, a SWAT team was called around 8:30 p.m., according to police.

The SWAT team convinced the homeowner that it was in his best interest to call the suspect and to convince him to come out, according to police.

Fausett surrendered around 9:30 p.m.

"When he came out of the house, he claimed (Moralez) was still in the bathroom, scared to death," Knight said.

Three minutes after Fausett surrendered, Moralez exited.

"We were able to call her out verbally from the front entry," Knight said.

Fausett has been arrested five previous times for charges of grand theft, drug possession and probation violation. Moralez has also been arrested five other times for charges of petit theft, drug possession and shoplifting.
