Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 9 months AGO
Norma Jean Coalter, 84, was born on Feb. 20, 1931, to Forrest and K. Louise Huffman in Elkhart, Ind.
As her father was a minister, Jean spent her childhood in several locations, mostly in Ohio. She graduated from Milton Union High School in West Milton, Ohio, in 1948. She attended Bethel College in Indiana for one year following high school.
Jean married Jimmie D. Coalter in August 1952, and moved to Biloxi, Miss., where Jim was stationed with the U.S. Air Force. They returned to Ohio after his enlistment was completed. Sensing a call to full time Christian service, Jim and Jean spent four years in northern Indiana while Jim attended Bethel College.
After a short time pastoring in northern Indiana, Jim, Jean and their three children went to Brazil in 1962 where they were missionaries until 1974. Jim and Jean then pastored at Trinity Missionary Church in Yale, Mich. from 1974 to 1981.
After Jim's death in 1981, Jean spent a year as "dorm mom" at the residence hall for female students at Bethel College in Indiana. She was also an administrative secretary at Gospel Center Missionary Church in South Bend, Ind., for a time. She returned to Ohio in 1983, where she worked as a secretary in the Electronic Warfare Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
In 1995 Jean moved to O'Fallon, Ill., to be near her daughter, Joni. Jean followed Joni to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 2009 where she lived until her death. She lived at Heritage Place for several years, and at Legends Park for the last few months of her life. She attended Coeur d'Alene Church of the Nazarene.
Jean died on April 15, 2015. She is survived by three children: Joni, Jeff and John; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held for her family in New Carlisle, Ohio.
