The coaches and players for Flathead and Glacier tennis will finally get to sleep in for a change.

After road trips to Missoula the last two Saturdays for dual action that began with a 6 a.m. bus trip and an equally early morning jaunt to Great Falls back on March 28 to open the season, both schools are home for the weekend.

Missoula Big Sky, Hellgate and Sentinel have the honor of traveling this time to the Flathead Valley for today’s Kalispell Invitational.

This event is a flight tournament beginning at 9 a.m.

The Nos. 1-2 singles and doubles will play at the courts at Flathead Valley Community College.

No. 3 girls singles and doubles will be located at Thompson Park. Liberty Park will have the No. 3 boys singles and doubles.

Each school has four entries in singles and doubles, which means schools will have two entries in one of the flights of their chosing.

Flathead will be looking for Jenna Jensen to get back on track at No. 1 singles and for Ellie Berreth to maintain her winning ways at No. 2.

“She lost a couple tough matches,” FHS coach Rick Berreth said of Jensen.

“She had a really good win streak (going to start the season).”

Berreth says Jensen “has solid ground strokes, is able to get to the net. Her focus is a real strength of her game. She pretty much does it on her own.”

Ellie Berreth has won five straight matches.

“Patience and competitiveness,” coach Berreth said of Ellie’s strengths.

“She has really good patience for a freshman. Her serves have been consistence. Her ground strokes are solid.”

In doubles, coach Berreth said Claire Bradley, a freshman, will get her regular doubles partner back — junior Bailey Bladholm — as they prepare for the final stretch of the season.

“They have already won some matches,” coach Berreth said.

Flathead’s Kody Butts, who will be playing No. 2 singles, missed the first part of season with field trips and sickness. Coach Berreth says “he’s just getting back in the groove of things.”

No. 1 singles player Daniel Olszewski picked up his first win of the season against Columbia Falls while Tristan Dills and Eric West, at No. 1 doubles, “have a little bit of momentum going,” coach Berreth said.

“They won two out of the last three and played tough against the top Hellgate team.”

Glacier coach Josh Munro likes how Amber Hamblin and McKenna Tinseth have been performing.

“She went 3-0 in Missoula and has won five in a row,” he said of Hamblin.

“She’s on a really nice roll, hitting really solid.”

Tinseth, playing the second or third singles slot, “is hitting the ball well,” Munro said.

“Every match she’s grinding them out, getting a little better every time. She is playing very solid.”

In girls doubles for Glacier, Kali Mathison and Anna Cecil have played doubles for the last couple of matches.

“We’re still feeling out doubles, still looking to see what partners will jell,” Munro said.

“We have nine girls we feel strongly about. We just have to find the right pairs.”

Munro said Hunter Blalack and Spencer Johnson will be challenged today by Colin Bahin of Big Sky. Bahin finished fourth at state.

“It will be a good, hard-fought battle between the three of them,” he said in No. 1 singles.

“It should be interesting.”

In doubles, Sam Stern and Holland Blalack “have put together a great season,” Munro said. “They are getting better every match. This will be a good weekend to help establish themselves as a (high) seed for divisional.”

Next weekend Flathead and Glacier are back in Missoula for an invitational. A trip to Helena follows for an invitational before divisionals and state.
