Columbia Falls man dies in ATV crash

A Columbia Falls man who died Saturday morning in an ATV crash west of Eureka has been identified as 30-year-old Andrew John Mahncke, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.
He reportedly sideswiped another ATV before going off Sophie Lake Road at a high rate of speed.
Trooper Neil Duram said Mahncke collided with several trees after leaving the roadway, causing fatal head and chest injuries. Mahncke was wearing a helmet, but it was not securely fastened. He was pronounced dead in the ambulance.
Alcohol consumption was a factor in the early-morning crash, according to the Duram.
The crash occurred during a large gathering of ATV enthusiasts known as the Koocanusa Fun Days.
The Montana Highway Patrol and Lincoln County Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.
Duram said citations related to driving an ATV under the influence of alcohol are pending for the driver whose ATV was struck by Mahncke just before the crash. Duram said they believe that man’s driving did not cause the crash, however.
A third, unrelated ATV rider also could face a driving under the influence citation.
