Wind expands fire to six acres

A grass fire burned six acres near Ashley Meadows south of Kalispell on Wednesday afternoon.
The fire originated from a single burn pile, but windy and dry conditions caused flames to spread, according to South Kalispell Fire Chief Chris Yerkes.
“It got really close to one house, and was really close to others,” Yerkes said. “But we got it before it reached those.”
Some collapsed barns and fences were destroyed in the fire, but no homes were lost and no injuries were reported.
Emergency dispatch called on multiple departments to respond, including South Kalispell, Evergreen Fire Rescue, West Valley, Smith Valley and the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.
Crews cleared the scene after a few hours.
