SANDPOINT — Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS rescued two paddlers who overturned their kayaks in the Pend Oreille River on Saturday.

Firefighters were summoned to the north side of the river shortly before 6 p.m. after receiving a report from an East Pacific Street resident who spotted the pair in a telescope more than a thousand feet from shore.

“Somebody saw that they weren’t moving very fast and it didn’t look like they were kayaking. It looked like they were swimming,” said firefighter Britain Whitley.
