WHITEFISH — While records are meant to be broken, sometimes they’re slaughtered.

At Saturday’s Whitefish ARM Invitational track and field meet, the girls 800-meter run fell victim to two hungry runners, carelessly striding towards the record book while leaving the field in their dust.

Glacier’s Annie Hill and Bigfork’s Bryn Morley both posted a season best in the race and beat the previous ARM record with ease.

In 2005, Bigfork’s Brooke Andrus claimed the top 800-meter mark in meet history, finishing in 2:19.56.

Morley and Hill beat Andrus’ time by eight seconds.

Two-hundred meters into the race the two freshman had already established a favorable lead with Morley out in front.

Hill made a move, passing Morley at the 600-meter mark. Morley had plenty left in the tank, streaking past Hill with just under 100 meters to go, leading down the stretch for the meet record and the top time in the state — 2:11.32.

Hill’s time was 2:11.96.

“It went really well. It kind of went as I planned,” Morley said. “I figured we would go out really fast and we did. At the finish line I guess I just knew I had it so I went for it.”

Morley, who posted a 2:13.16 first-place finish a week ago at the Russ Pilcher Top 10 Meet, noted without Hill — absent in the 800 at the Top 10 — her time may have been slower.

“It was awesome, I knew that I could get there, but I knew I needed someone else to help me,” Morley said of her record-breaking mark. “It was really cool.”

The second place finish was hardly a heartbreaker for Hill. She won the 3,200-meter run in 10:36.4 for an ARM record of her own.

Glacier went on to win both the girls and boys team titles.

JoJo Sherman (pole vault), Keyawna Larson (javelin), Brock Sandry (3,200-meter run), Aaron Robinson (110 hurdles), Austin Cook (triple jump and 300-meter hurdles) and Harrison Kauffman (discus and shot put) joined Hill and the boys 400-meter-relay team with first-place finishes for the Wolfpack.

Larson’s winning toss of 134-2 was a new meet record.

Sandry had plenty of company at the finish line of the 3,200. After finishing in 9:59.80, he was met by teammates Brock Adkins (10:30.64) and Noah Hill (10:35.02) as the trio finished in the top three places, respectively.

It was a busy day for plenty of athletes at the meet, especially Plains’ Hailey Phillips and Whitefish’s Jed Nagler.

Phillips won the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and led off the 1,600-meter relay team, which finished fourth. Her 100 hurdles mark of 15.28 is a new ARM record, and Plains finished second in the team standings.

Nagler, a junior, anchored the 400- and 1,600-meter relays, which finished second and first, respectively. He also won the high jump, nearly clearing 6-foot-8-inches before settling for 6-6. He also tried out the discus and shot put, opting out of the 100-meter dash.

It was Nagler, who overtook Bigfork’s Matt Farrier in the final stretch of the 1,600-meter relay, who give Whitefish the victory.

“It was only my second race so my legs were pretty fresh all day,” said Nagler, who stuck to his usual routine during a taxing day.

“Drink a lot of water, a lot of fluids and rest when you can. Stay out of the sun and make sure you’re in shape for the next race. Just always come out with the same attitude — just have fun.”

The Bulldogs finished third in the boys team standings. Bigfork nipped Whitefish by four points for second place.

All total five records were set, all by the girls. The final mark was broken by Kayla Holmes of Plains in the discus with a throw of 145-6.
