"Ultimately, at the end of the day, our league is tight," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "Anybody can beat anybody. Lewiston's proved they can beat almost everybody. It's a back-and-forth deal. We've been working really hard on a mindset and wanting to will yourself to get on base, will yourself to succeed."
In the fifth inning of the second game, Sumner tacked on a three-run blast over the fence in left field that gave Coeur d'Alene a 6-3 lead. He took advantage of the fact that after Lewiston catcher Jessup Scott set up on the outside part of the plate, Bengal starting pitcher Mikel Jensen missed his spot and instead went inside.
Sumner's two homers on Saturday were his first of the season.
"He missed inside and I was just looking for a pitch to drive and he put it there," Sumner said of the second homer. "So I just swung at the first pitch."
Five lead changes in the second game culminated with the big sixth. Devin Kluss completed his 4-for-4 day with a one-out double. Michael Hicks reached on an error to short, then Gibson Green was hit by a pitch from reliever Dalton Stamper. With the bases loaded and Reggie Nault facing Stamper in a lefty-lefty matchup, he wore a pitch on his shoulder and drove in a run that cut Lewiston's lead to 8-7. That set up Sumner's big hit.
"The kids did a great job of finding a way to get it done and refusing to get out," Rook said. "Obviously Jackson to finish the (first) game with a big swing was epic. He's been working hard, he's been improved and he's staying with it. He's been patient, it's his first year here (on varsity), he's just trying to figure it all out. The second game, it was a great game. I'm excited with the kids trying to play well here toward the end."
Connor Cardinel struck out two in the seventh to earn his first save this season.
In the first game, Hicks hit his fourth home run of the season in the third inning, a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Coeur d'Alene, who scored five of its seven runs with two outs, tied the first game in the fourth inning as Plum singled to score Nault to tie the game at 4-all.
Vikings starting pitcher Colin Richards threw a complete game, striking out seven, walking five and allowing four earned runs.
