SPIRIT LAKE - State firefighters were able to get a quick handle on a human-caused wildfire north of Spirit Lake Thursday evening.

The Idaho Department of Lands was able to contain the fire to 3 acres with the help of logging crews that were in the area. This was despite at least one reportedly unruly boater who refused to get out of the way of helicopters that were dipping water from Spirit Lake.

While Shane O'Shea, with the IDL, had not heard about the boater blocking the air assault on the fire, police scanner traffic on Thursday and Friday indicated it was a problem.

Kootenai County Marine deputies were dispatched to aid the helicopters, but attempts to reach KCSO Spokesman Stu Miller for details were unsuccessful Friday.

O'Shea said the fire was initially reported at 10 acres in size, but that was later reduced.

"Once we got boots on the ground and GPS, we determined it was only 3 acres in size," O'Shea said. "We were able to get it 100 percent contained and I expect to have it controlled (Friday) afternoon."

O'Shea said "thanks to a lot of air resources and local loggers, we caught it quickly."

He said logging crews used their equipment to dig fire lines all the way around the fire, which helped to get it under control.

While O'Shea said he cannot release any details of the investigation, he was able to confirm that it was "most likely human caused."
