Musician storms into the writing business

How would your town react if a miracle mysteriously occurred during a mundane church service?

Buck Storm, a singer/songwriter based in Hayden, tackles that very question in his debut novel, "The Miracle Man," which was released late last June.

His tale centers around Luke Hollis, a sheriff in the small Arizona town of Paradise who has to challenge everything he believes in dealing with the aftermath of the mysterious healing. More miracles soon follow, and it's up to him to keep the peace as more people flock to the town.

Storm's passion for the Christian faith becomes evident in his artistic endeavors, which include his music, weekly blog and novel. He's co-written music with Gospel Hall of Fame musician Randy Stonehill, occasionally posts hypothetical conversations with Jesus published on his blog, and he and his wife host small group tours to Israel when he's not on tour.

Storm said he completed his second book, "Truckstop Jesus," which is scheduled to be published in October 2016. He said he is currently working on his third novel, "The Beautiful Ashes of Gomez Gomez."

Storm talked to The Press and answered some questions about "The Miracle Man."

Did you find it challenging working in a new medium?

"Yes. I just jumped in without real consideration to craft. When I first started, I honestly thought it would be like writing a really long song... How hard could it be, right? It became apparent pretty quickly that this was a completely different medium - one I've learned to respect very much."

How did your music career influence the book?

"I found myself pulling lines from my songs. And of course things from my travels - lots of people and stories I've encountered along the road. In fact, the Venus Motel in 'The Miracle Man' is from a song - the last one on my first record ["Goodbye from Venus"]. The Venus made its way into 'The Miracle Man' and almost became its own character in the book. It's also on the cover."

How did you get the book published?

"That's a miracle in itself, really. I finally got the manuscript to the place where I thought the book was worthwhile and worth pursuing a contract. A traditional publishing deal really doesn't happen in today's world without the help of a good literary agent and finding one can take months or even longer. I decided to write query letters and sample chapters to 12 established agencies and wait and see what happened. I got an email within two hours from a great agent saying he wanted to represent the book, which blew me away. We waded through a ton of rejection letters then finally landed a contract with an editor that really believed in the book."

What do you hope to accomplish with the book?

"I've had one hope and one prayer for it - that it would be a delight for people. I want it to be a story that people will read with a flashlight at night because they can't put it down. It's a dark world and there's not a lot of good news out there these days. I hope the book makes people smile."
