BAYVIEW — Growth of the Three Sisters fire was minimal Thursday, allowing firefighters to begin working on wrangling the blaze.

More than 220 people and several air units worked throughout the day, taking advantage of good weather conditions to mitigate the spread of the wildfire believed to have been caused by humans Tuesday afternoon. Karen Sjoquist, a spokeswoman with the Idaho Department of Lands, told The Press Thursday that the 264-acre fire is now 30 percent contained.

“The fire activity was not significant at all today,” she added.

An IDL Type 3 Incident Management Team, led by Jason Svancara, is focusing firefighting operations on preventing the fire from spreading toward private land and timber resources.

Sjoquist said there are no structures threatened by the fire at this time, but some are within a mile of it. As of Thursday, no evacuations had been recommended.

The following roads have been closed until further notice due to fire activity: County Road 22, where the county road ends, and Cherokee Road at Perimeter Road.

Nearby residents can receive information regarding emergency situations in Bonner County via mobile phone, email, and computer, at www.nixi.com.

The Three Sisters Fire is burning 1.5 miles north of, but is unrelated to, the Cape Horn Fire, which covered more than 1,300 acres of land near Bayview last month.

Through Aug. 31, the Kootenai County Solid Waste Department will provide special containers at the Athol Rural Residential Collection site, located at 7222 East Howard Road. The primary focus for this temporary service, according to a news release, is to collect woody debris (wood, limbs and brush) that was left on Kootenai County residential property during the response phase of the Cape Horn Fire.

“Absolutely no other waste will be accepted in these containers,” the news release states. “There is limited disposal capacity, so we ask that each resident limit themselves to the equivalent of two pickup loads per day. Please be prepared to provide proof of residency for disposal.”
