Denny Denniston, 90

Retired Brigadier General Clyde "Denny" Denniston passed away peacefully on August 1, 2015. Denny was born in Portland, Indiana in 1925 to parents Clyde Roscoe and Esther Denniston. He grew up with sisters JoAnn and Mary and graduated from high school in Greenville, Ohio in 1943. Upon graduation, Denny entered the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. He graduated in June 1946 with a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, his pilot rating, and a Bachelor of Science degree. A few hours after his commissioning, Denny married the love of his life Marjanna Manlove of Newburg, New York. He served in the Air Force for 34 years from 1943-1976. His daughter Sherry was born in New Mexico, son Robert in Arizona, and son Peter in Virginia.

He began his flying career as a bi-plane pilot and flew various aircraft including the B25/B29/B47/B52 bombers and the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane.

In July 1966 he was awarded a Master of Science degree from George Washington University.

As a senior officer he was a commander of the 320th Bombardment wing at Mather Air Force Base in California and the 92nd Strategic Aerospace Wing at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington.

He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General effective May 1, 1972 by President Nixon. His last assignment was Inspector General of the Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.

General Denniston's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with oak leaf cluster. He holds the aeronautical ratings of command pilot and navigator.

In 1977 General Denniston retired. He and his wife Marjanna built a home in Hayden Lake, Idaho near his earlier command at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, WA. In later years he was involved in the Boy Scouts, Rotary, and the Order of Daedalians. He loved to play tennis and ski with his friends and family.

General Denniston was a great leader of men and provider for his family. He lived a full and happy life surrounded by people who loved and respected him. He will be missed.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Marjanna, sisters Mary and Joanne, daughter Sherry, sons Rob and Peter, grandchildren (Jenny, Chris, Amy, Matthew, Theresa, Ryan, Blake, and Grace) and 9 great grandchildren.
